La Citta Romantica – City of Romance – is Positano, also known as the pearl of the Amalfi coast, just South of Naples. Positano’s tiers of gelato coloured buildings seem to emerge right from the waterfront and then cling onto the cliffs of the coast – a spectacular, eye feasting view, Xmas and Birthday rolled into one for photographers and painters.
Very small, narrow alleys catapult you back to the time when Positano was a sleepy fishing village. Typically Italian, stylish boutiques invite you to shop and ristorantes / trattorias offer high quality food.
In summer the towns tend to get overcrowded, so do it like we did and travel in the off season – May and late September / October are perfect. From Positano you can take a boat cruise to famous Capri (yes, home of the Capri pants). It’s best to base yourself at Sorrento (16 km from Positano) as from there, you can easily explore the rest of the Amalfi coast (Ravello,Amalfi) as well as Naples (50km) and Pompeji, all easy to reach by train, bus or rental car.
