Having recently relocated from London to Berlin, Rebel and reminisced about our sisterly times in London.
We’re none too pleased at the UK’s “Brexit” decision. The British isles were my home for 11 years and while they were always a bit different than the continent, the U.K. was firmly part of the EU. After all, London is a big European melting pot and Paris is only a two hour train ride away. One of our all-time favourite places in London is South Kensington, aka little Paris (due to the presence of Frenchies living here, French bakeries, pharmacies and schools). You can feast your eyes on the stately and manicured homes, have a crêpe at the Duke square or pop by the famous Hummingbird bakery for a cheesecake chocolate brownie.
Compared to London’s Shoreditch that we visited just a day prior, we were taken aback by the fact that the beautiful gardens in the area are locked and only accessible for the (mostly wealthy) residents. A public park not open to all residents? Sometimes the classist nature of UK society is inescapable, like we’ve been transported back in time and straight into a Downton Abbey episode.
Being part of the European Union and the continent surely helped to break down these barriers which is why we’re dismayed at the decision. There is a bit of a precedent in Europe for referendums not necessarily being accepted and acted upon by governments (Greek bailout anyone?), so lets keep our fingers crossed that this all fades away into nothingness! Wishful thinking?
