How to make a real Vienna Schnitzel

Cuisine/ Romantique
The Schnitzel is a global delicatesse savoured all over the world. The term “Vienna Schnitzel” is protected under German and Austrian law stating that only Schnitzel containing veal is a real Schnitzel, which tastes best.
It is believed that the Schnitzel orginated from Northern Italy as the cotaletta alla Milanese.
Making this delicious, hearty meal is very easy, all you need to do is to get the following ingredients and to follow these 6 easy steps:
  • Thinly sliced veal chops (idea thickness is as thick as your finger)
  • 2 Eggs
  • Butter
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Flour
1. Flatten the veal chops with a mallet
2. Put salt and a bit of pepper on the both sides of the chops
3. Set up dipping stations: 1 Plate containing beaten eggs, 1 plate containing flour mixed with breadcrumbs (50/50).
4. Dip the cutlet in the beaten eggs, then immediately dunk it into the flour/breadcrumbs mix
5. Shake off any excess crumbs and throw the veal cutlet in a pan with melted butter and fry it gold-brown from both sides
6.  Remove the meat from the oil and place on paper towels so that excess oil drips off. Serve immediately with a fresh salad and potatoes.

Guten Appetit!

Autumn snuggle hats

Those crisp autumn mornings and evenings are chilly and temperatures can drop below zero, time to keep our heads and ears warm with soft wool and cashmere. I love wearing bright colours on grey winter days.  Most of my coats are classicly coloured like black or camel, an ideal base to add some colour.

Here I am wearinga stripey Lacoste hat.

“It’s not easy having a good marriage –

Astro & Spirit/ Rebel Alexa

– but I don’t want easy. Easy doesn’t make you grow. Easy doesn’t make you think. I thank God everyday that I am married to a man who makes me think. That’s my definition of true love.” Madonna

“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.” Madonna

How to rock Broderie Anglaise

Dresses/ Romantique/ Wardrobe

I can’t get enough of Broderie Anglaise, the next big trend for next spring /summer 2012  as shown at last month fashion shows.  The feminine, eyelet-embroidered fabric in white and light gelato colours such as lemon and pistachio is just too sweet to resist.

Check out this Peter Pan collared blouse from Whistles (current season) who have already picked up the trend. To shake-up the good-girl appeal of this blouse, break this style with a short denim skirt or with a leather jacket as shown  by Spanish actress Carla Niento who paired her feminine broderie anglaise dress with a quilted leather jacket and blue Pretty Ballerinas.

Louis Vuitton’s dreamy Spring / Summer 2012 pret a porter show saw models dressed like dolls in pastel coloured girlish dresses emerging from horse carousels.

Military Coat

Coats/ Rebel Alexa/ Wardrobe

Label Overview

Gaby Aghion started Chloé in 1952 with a vision she called “luxury prêt-à-porter.” Her focus on wearable yet beautiful daywear gave the line currency with chic young women. In the seventies, its bohemian, feminine details made it a favorite of icons like Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and Jackie O. Chloé is known for launching the careers of young designers, including a 28-year-old Karl Lagerfeld in 1966 and a 26-year-old Stella McCartney in 1997. Today, the label is helmed by London native Hannah MacGibbon, a former assistant to Phoebe Philo, the house’s seminal director from 2001-2006. Bags and shoes continue to rank among Chloé’s most coveted wares. The brand’s romantic Left Bank insouciance burns brightly despite—or perhaps because of—its rapidly revolving roster of young design talent. In June 2011, Clare Waight Keller, credited for transforming Pringle of Scotland into a contemporary fashion brand, replaced Hannah MacGibbon as the creative director of Chloé.

Leather & Tweed

Romantique what I am mixing  on this chilly autumn morning on Holland Road, Notting Hill. The navy blue, mini skirt from Stefanel a la Twiggy with leather stitching detail complements the leather jacket  beautifully.

When mixing materials, don’t forget  Parisian style icon Ines de la Fressange’s advise: Never mix too many  materials: Satin + Velvet + Chiffon + Tweed = textile overdose.

Midnight in Paris

Movie & Books/ Romantique

Woody Allen’s new movie “Midnight in Paris” doesn’t have any of Allen’s usual dark and cynical elements. The movie is an orginal, easy-to-watch Romcom full of breathakingly beautiful scenes of Paris and it’s one of those movies I would have wished could have gone on forever .

The movie in a nutshell without spoiling too much: It’s  about an engaged couple coming to Paris going through experiences that will change their lives forever. The film is essentially about living in the here and now and living life to the full.

Cast includes French beauty Marion Cottilard, Owen Wilson, Carla Bruni, Kathy Bates and others.

Relief for thirsty hair

Beauty/ Romantique
On the one hand I’m blessed with full tresses, on the other hand my hair very dry, rebellious and often frizzy. The fact that London tap water is very hard and the weather often moist, does not help at all!
On my last visit to Germany, my hairdresser suggested L’oreals Mythic Oil (available only at salons) . A lightweight oil you put on towel dryed hair to lock in moisture before blowdrying. The benefit is that, unlike many other hair oils, this oil doesn’t weigh your mane down and it keeps it’s oomph!
Another great hair oil is Hot Oil, available from V05 or Kerastase. Hot oil is an intense nourishing treatment for dry hair.  You heat up the small container before massaging the oil on the wet hair. Leave in for 1 minute, rinse out, then shampoo as normal. Et voila, my hair is silky smooth and frizz free (until the next rain).
Heading up the trends of hair oil is Argan Oil, a heavier Moroccan hair oil. Have any of you tried it? Want to share it with us?

Joie de Vivre a la Fifi

Decor/ Romantique

Are you a romantic at heart, been to Paris and fallen in love with the city? Then you will love the playful, paintings of Fifi Flowers, depicting typical Parisian scenes like Cafés, view from the window overlooking the Eifel tower or a fashionista strolling along the Seine in pink high-heels.

When I painted this picture, inspired by Fifi, I had so much fun and painting the colourful, dreamy pictures provide a great escape from the sometimes grey every day routine.

You can send photos of your travels or even your pets and Fifi will turn them into one of her wonderful paintings. See her site address on the right under blogroll.

The famous Sex and the City scene of season 6: Carrie standing on the balcony of the Hotel Plaza Athénée, reenacted by Fifi.

Peter Pan Collar Sweater

Jumpers/ Rebel Alexa/ Wardrobe
