Summer essentials: Me and My Straw Bag

Accessoires/ Bags/ Romantique

Straw Bag miu Miu street style London

Whether it’s lunch in the city, Aperol o’clock on an Italian beach or cocktail hour in the evening, my raffia bag goes everywhere with me in summer.

My Miu Miu basket purse is one of my oldest fashion investments I own: Almost a decade ago, I ordered this gem on American ebay. Clearly not having thought it through properly before feverishly clicking the “buy it now” button, I did pay heavy import tax on the bag for delivery to Germany. Fast forward ten years and I could not be happier with the expenditure. Long before French style icon Ines de la Fressange declared the little straw bag a summer staple, this little bag has been brightening up many of my outfits. Me and my straw bag are inseperable, like Jane Birkin and her little wicker basket!

In the pics I am keeping it girly & nautical with a navy broderie anglaise skirt and Breton shirt.

I’m wearing:

  • Straw bag with bamboo handles from Miu Miu
  • Breton shirt mariniere from COS
  • Broderie Anglaise skirt from Max & Co
  • Pointy Ballerina flats from Versace

Tres French, tres chic!

Must-have summer Accessory: The Panama Hat

Accessoires/ Romantique/ Wardrobe

Panama hat street style london

Inspired by Rebel’s recent stylish post on Panama / Fedora  hats and her insistence that this is a must-have item to jazz up my wardrobe, I finally gave in.

After a quick dash to our local TK Maxx in  Wimbledon, I’m now in possession of my latest HG accessory, a soft straw panama hat, adorned with an obligatory grosgrain bow.

How to style the Panama hat?

After Rebel’s uber-cool outfit, pairing the hat with a navy, cropped Strenesse blazer, Zara cigarette trousers and quilted Chanel-esque ballet pumps, I had big shoes to fill!

For a casual day out in Wimbledon, I chose my trusted Breton shirt, a  peachy boucle skirt with navy grosgrain piping and navy espadrilles.

I drew inspiration not only from Rebel but also from gorgeous Diane Kruger, pairing her hat with  summer dresses and converse.

  • Breton shirt by Banana Republic

Exhibition – The Glamour of Italian Fashion from 1945 – 2014

Current Affairs/ Icons/ Wardrobe

Dresses worn in films are seen displayed during a media preview of the "The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014" exhibition, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London

It’s been a fashion packed Spring! After visiting the Vogue Festival last weekend, I went to the exhibition “The Glamour of Italian Fashion from 1945 – 2014” at London’s V&A Museum in South Kensington.

The exhibition attempts to answer the question of why the Italians own chic, glamour and produce top designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Gianfranco Ferre, Gucci, Missoni, Prada, Pucci and Versace.

It takes a closer look at how Italy’s fashion industry emerged from the poverty of WW2, with the help of the American Marshall Plan, and how it changed Italy’s image and fortune.

The first room of the exhibition is telling the story of businessman Giovanni Battista Giorgini, who  persuaded his contacts in US department stores to travel to Florence for fashion shows displaying designs from all over Italy. The shows were an instant hit and launched the fashion industry in Italy.  Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, and Elizabeth Taylor helped cement Italy’s image as fashion capital with impossibly glamorous performances in ‘50s films shot in Italy.

To this day, the “Made in Italy” trademark stands for high quality materials and artisanal craftsmanship. The country boasts strong traditions, hundreds of years old, in industries like spinning, dyeing, weaving, cutting, and stitching. Such skills were often passed down from generation to generation, and laid the foundation for Italy’s rise to the top of the style world.

The iconic Baguette Bag from Fendi. The name Baguette bag derives from size of the bag which is small enough to carry under the arm like a loaf of bread.

This exhibition is also interesting because it’s running during a time of change in Italy’s fashion industry. A short documentary at the end of the exhibition claims that a lot of Italy’s designers are over 70 years old and fresh blood needs to be given a chance to build the foundation and  the future of Italy’s fashion industry.

I love Italian fashion for it’s impeccable tailoring. You don’t need to buy high-end brands like Valentino to get this kind of quality. Shops like Max & Co (Max Mara’s little sister) offer more affordable style whilst maintaining the exquisite artisan spirit of Italy. Here I am wearing a floral dress from Max Mara,  sandals from AGL, Attilio Giusti Leombruni and cross body bag from Moschino.

Strawberries and Summer

Accessoires/ Romantique/ Skirts
I'm wearing a fruit printed navy skirt from Zara, gingham checked shirt from Pepe, sandals from Spain and strawbag from Miu Miu

Strawberries and summer belong together like Aperol and soda, like London and rain! As a woman of pleasure, it’s only logic to translate my love for all things sweet into fashion by wearing a strawberry print skirt. With temperatures rising, all I need for a casual Sunday is a fruit printed skirt, a vichy checked top, my Miu Miu straw bag and flat summer sandals.

I’m a huge fan of fruit and chocolate infused fashion and beauty: My perfumes are gourmand scents, smelling of pannacotta (Signorina) By Salvatore Ferragamo or gummi bears (Mugler’s Angel). My jewellery depicts sweet Parisian deserts and gingerbread houses. I like my style to be fun and child like when I feel like it!

Cool Accessories can really vamp up an otherwise bla outfit. Long, luxurious, buttery soft leather gloves are one of those accessories. As seen in Miu Miu’s Spring Summer 2013 campaign, they look the epitome of elegance, best shown off  in coats with three quarter length sleeves.

Above: I’m wearing a white Feyem jacket with three quarter length trumpet sleeves and powder pink gloves from Italian fashion designer Max & Co.

The Trophy Investment Coat

Coats/ Romantique/ Wardrobe

Like no other clothing item, the coat has the power to transform us. Its secret is simple; it consists of more fabric and covers up most garments. In other words,  it is the perfect moderator.

Women who have short legs can wear a high waisted coat – and instantly resemble a long legged runway model. Someone who is strongly built around the legs and hips but has a petite upper body can wear a coat with an A-Line shape. A coat can compensate for most body shape imbalances.

You should never be a penny pincher  when buying a coat – after all, it’ll last longer than any T-Shirt or a flimsy dress and because you’ll wear it more often, it is more visible. A  quality coat crafted with premium materials can last you a decade.   Go for classics like wool or cashmere in staple colours like  navy, grey or black.

Above and below: I’m wearing a Miu Miu salt and pepper coat with chain detail in the back. It’s classic shape can be worn with dresses or trousers and jeans. It’s made of pure wool.

Corduroy is back!

Romantique/ Trousers/ Wardrobe

Corduroy is not known for being the trendiest of materials –  Uni professors and the 70ies spring to mind. However, this year corduroy is back! Hip details like zippers at the side and leg vamp up the trousers. My navy skinny trousers are from Stefanel.

Shoulder season

Romantique

September is a tricky month. I don’t want to let go of my summer wardrobe yet but it’s still too early for those knits, tweeds and wools. So it mix up: Autumny knits and summer items (straw bag).

I’m wearing a stripey cashmere cardi from Jean-Paul Gaultier. Black dress from Max Mara. Miu Miu straw bag, Tamaris sandals and brown bunny pendant from Thomas Sabo.
