You know you are a German living in London if….

German living in London Romantique

You are over the moon when you stumble across a German bakery that serves full-rye-sourdough-sunflower-pumpkinseed-whole-grain-bread! Bliss.

Kamps Bakery HIgh Street Kensigton

You shop at Lidl and Aldi, usingyour own plastic shopping bags and you always have a £1 coin ready for the trolley.

You count yourself lucky if you find a flat in London that doesn’t have damp walls and rats, so you put up with extortionate rent, single glazed windows and paper thin walls. Hearing your neighbours coughing and sneezing is standard!

You find out that British food is better than it’s reputation, thanks to globalisation.

Romantique Borough Market

You are considered “rude” if you tell your colleague honestly her new hair cut is not amazing. Next time, tell her it’s “lovely”.

You get sympathetic looks when you don’t order alcohol in a pub because everyone automatically assumes you’re a recovering alcoholic. (In Britain, there’s no other reason NOT to order alcohol).

You get frustrated at not having 5 recycling bins.

German recycling trash cans

You are shocked having to find out that people have to PAY for dental treatment!

You sizzle yourself in Spanish midday heat on holiday to stock up on sunshine. Who knows when you’ll see it again?!

You look overdressed in winter!

 British girls in winter

You are snapped up in the job market, as you likely have completed 4 year masters vocational training to be a builder, hairdresser, baker, secretary or plumber.

You have to explain what a fluff shaver is. No, it’s not a jumper massager!

You prefer Nutella on toast to Full English breakfast!

british breakast and German Nutella

You get admiring looks when you tell people you’re from Berlin, the Londoners’ favourite city on the continent!

London Tube Style Rockmantique

Romantique/ Wardrobe

This London fashionista has it all matched perfectly: Romantic delicate flowery silk blouse mixed with a classic Chanel-esque boucle box jacket – as a further nod to Coco Chanel, she added a quilted chain leather handbag into the mix.

Now we come to the rock part of the oufit: Skinny Jeans with zipper details and nude suede wedges complete with wooden heel and studs – double wow!

London hairstyle

Beauty/ London/ Romantique

District tube line, 8 am: Two very trendy but different ladies showing off their trendy hair dos.

The girl in pic number one goes for the full on”TOWIE” glamour: Long, blond hair extensions, thick, heavy fake lashes, bling jewellery and the obligatory Chanel monogram handbag (from Turkey).

The lady in the below pic on the right sports the Anna Wintour bob – a graphic and accurat cut, glossy and shiny in a rich dark chocolate colour. Perfect for her oval face shape and such a timeless cut.

Which hairstyle of these two fashionable ladies do you prefer?

Borough Markets, London

Cuisine/ London/ Romantique/ Travel

Borough Markets, just a stroll away from the popular tourist attraction The London dungeons, located near London Bridge, is a great outdoor food market, claiming to exist since 1014!

The bustling market offers fine food stalls from all over the world as well as fruit and vegetable stands.

Needless to say, I stock up on German goodies at the German stall but make sure to also check out the Spanish stall for a yummy Chorizo sandwich. Several stalls and restaurants specialise in fish, freshly prepared in front of your eyes.

So next time you’re in London, make sure to not miss Borough markets for an authentic, British market experience.

Lecker Rostbratwurst and Sauerkraut, just like back home! Did you know that Sauerkraut is extremly healthy? It flushes the toxins out of your body, drink it as a juice once a day for peachy skin!

German beer garden in London

Cuisine/ London/ Romantique/ Travel

When it comes to German restaurants in London, I have tried some pretty awful ones. German restaurants often cater for British people and what they think is typically German, think greasy sausages tasting like soap and gallons of beer.

So I was delighted when I found this gem: Stein’s, a delicious German beer garden situated next to the riverside, just a couple of hundred metres from Richmond Bridge, the perfect destination for a day out.  Wooden outdoor benches and tables make a German feel right at home here.  Everything hearty will be served from Currwurst and potato salad to a Bavarian sausage platter and Sauerkraut. For the more calorie conscious, tuck into a fitness salad or into the “Raditeller” – deliciously fresh rye bread topped with cream cheese and decorated with radish. Also the deserts are to die for – Choose from a fluffy Black Forest gateau or a typical German cheesecake made with Quark (a low fat soft cheese and light alternative to common cheesecakes).

Scooting in London

Romantique/ Shoes/ Wardrobe

Public transport in London is notorious – always late, always railworks going on, hopelessly overcrowded and sauna like temperatures in summer. One alternative – the bike, is not really an option, unless you harbour a death wish! Even though this method of transport is heavily promoted by London’s mayor Boris Johnson, London does not have cycle lanes and motorists, especially taxi drivers are extremly ruthless when it comes to pushing cyclists out of the way.

This is where the scooter comes in handy, for scooting a few kilometeres . The scooter is push powerd without an engine and can therefore be driven on the sidewalk – not recommend at Oxford Circus or in a snowstorm though. In spring, summer or autum the cityroller is unbeatable to escape the daily transport chaos.

I am wearing pink Pretty Ballerina pumps and vichy checked shorts by Esprit

English summer day out

Dresses/ Romantique/ Travel/ Wardrobe

At last,  this weekend we were lucky enough to get some sun after a (even for England!) below average temperature and rainy May, June and most of July. So we ventured off to Richmond to soak up the rays and for some fun in the sun. Richmond is a great part of London, easily to reach by overground from central London, beautifully situated next to the river Thames with pretty little cafes, typically English pubs full of character and great shops just off the main road in charming alleys. You can hire bikes or rowing boats and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the lush English countryside. Richmond Park is the largest royal Park in London and even contains 650 deer.

I’m wearing a marine dress that Rebel bought for me from the Mod box at TK Maxx – love it, thanks so much again! It’s great having a sister who knows my style and what I like even more than me! My shoes are from Tamaris.

Olympic gold medal revealed in London

Current Affairs/ London/ Romantique

Who said that working for a mining group is boring? On Wednesday my employer, Australian mining giant Rio Tinto, delighted us employees by revealing the Olympic Gold Medal for the Olympic Games in London next year. Rio is the sole provider of the medals which will be sourced from the mines in Salt Lake City, USA and Mongolia.  8 tonnes of metal will be used for the 2,700 medals.

Each employee had a photo taken, holding the impressive (and heavy!) gold medal, and we all got to meet British hottie, down to earth nice guy, and dual Olympic Gold medallist, James Cracknell.

We don’t realise is but the world of mining has got an impact on us every day and without mining, the world could not run. We need:

Borates for nail varnish

Aluminium for mascara cases and planes

Copper, Aluminium and Gold for smart phones

R&R on Portobello Road

Rebel/ Romantique/ Travel

Portobello Road in Notting Hill is a great, vibrant area of London! This is  the place where we spotted Boris Becker and Kate Moss strolling along, relaxed, unbothered and not noticed by anyone! Everyone minds their own business, it does not matter what you look like or who you are, even if you are Kate Moss! There’s something for everyone here, antiques shops and stands, hip and trendy boutiques, pound shops and great restaurants in the side streets just off Portobello Road. Don’t miss the Hummingbird Bakery for a chocolate brownie cheesecake or one of their legendary Red Velvet muffins!

I’m wearing a skirt from Mango and shoes from TK Maxx. My sister Rebel wears a cardigan from Ralph Lauren bought at TK Maxx.
