Slowly but surely, stormy gales and wet, dark days will take over from golden autumn. Time for Romantique and Rebel to dig out our favourite, timeless coat favourites for inspiration and a guide to what you should buy if you’re looking to invest in a new winter coat this year.

Taa daa! The following  winter coats and shapes have stood the test of time and trends and will serve you well for years to come.

The Duffle Coat (Romantique)

Hailing from Belgium, duffle is a coarse, thick woollen material. This quintessential British wardrobe staple typically comes with signature toggle fasteners .

Romantique’ s tip: The duffle coat is a sporty, casual choice. Pair it with dainty, feminine dresses or shoes for a modern clash of styles. Best in classic colours such as navy or cream.

The Candy coloured egg shape coat (Romantique)

The egg shape coat stems from my favourite fashion era, the 60s. The voluminous shape fits best with slim silhouettes like skinny jeans, cigarette pants or short skirts. Candy colours such as powder pink, lemon yellow or mint green are the perfect companion for this kind of coat.

The Parka Coat (Mummy Romantique)

The perennial parka coat is another style classic you can’t go wrong with. Made winter proof with cosy fur or fleece lining for bitterly cold January days. Similar to the duffle coat, this is an easy, cool basic, best styled with feminine hemlines and shoes for maximum effect!

The fire engine red coat (Rebel)

Red is a signal colour and a real show stopper. This colour works best with a minimalistic, straight blazer cut. Chic, sophisticated and not to be confused with Santa Claus.

The checkered plaid coat (rebel)

Think Kurt-Cobain flannel shirts meet grown-up Parisian chic. The black and red pattern garnered a lot of interest a few seasons back when Saint Laurent created a winter collection around this theme. Plaid coats are a great statement whilst still being classic enough to integrate into a variety of outfits
