Colour block Blue and Green and How to Wear It

Romantique/ Skirts/ Wardrobe

Blue and Green Streetstyle Stefanel

The old-fashioned rule of “Blue and green should never been seen” was luckily thrown out of the window a time long ago.   Blue and Green have become a modern classic.

I find that this colour combination works great when you stick to darker, saturated tones of blue and green (not neon green and sky blue for example).

The fresh combination of my navy skirt and turquoise jumper reminds me of the various shades of the Mediterrenean in mid-summer, ranging from deep blue to green. Perfect for the upcoming spring season.

The long month of January can seem dull and depressing, so I tend to reach for brighter colours to compensate while I still can. I am clinging onto my last shade of Aussie tan with generous lathers of moisturising creams and oils!

With the bronze coloured shoes from Max & Co, I’m injecting some warmth into the sea shades

What do you think about this combo, do you like pairing blue and green?

Vichy Gingham Playsuit for a day out in Manly, Australia

Australia/ Dresses/ Romantique/ Trousers/ Wardrobe

Manly Australia Gingham Playsuit Max Mara

My first weeks back in London have been super busy , I hardly had time to shift through our holiday photos, which already seems like a distant memory!

Even more reason to take time to look through the pictures and reminisce. One of our most memorable days out was a trip to Manly, a lively beach surburb North of Sydney. Just like Bondi, it’s a popular spot for backpackers, offering lots of cafes, restaurants, shops and bars. Manly has a ferry connection to the city, making it an ideal base for tourists. From the main beach, a stunning beach walk leads you to the sheltered Shelly’s beach. Shelly’s is the first choice for snorkelers, for it’s clear blue waters and surrounding  rocks, housing lots of Australia’s sea creatures.

For the overcast but warm and humid day, I wore:

  • Gingham Vichy playsuit by Max Mara
  • Cashmere pink cardigan from TK Maxx
  • Pink / white striped espadrilles from Bally
  • Red sunglasses from Versace
  • Mini bag from Moschino

  Australian waterdragon Manly

On the picturesque beach path from Manly to Shelly beach, you will most likely come across the Australian Water dragon, who is at home here. It looks like a mini-dragon and belongs to the family of lizards. Notices are hung up everywhere around the beach walk reminding visitors that you will be fined with up to 6 months in prison on attempt to “take a dragon”. Thanks for pointing that out, I’m not Daenerys Stormborn from “Game of Thrones”. It’s more likely you find me pinching a kitten than a water dragon!

As you know, I’m a big fan of whimsical Parisian custume jeweller Les Néréides and their cooky-cute sub line N2.

So you can imagine that I was beyond excited when I discovered that Les Néréides’ new collection is already out in the London Covent Garden shop! Oh the joys of working in walking distance to my favourite shop!

The new collection does not disappoint and continues in the same enchanted, lovingly detailed  fashion of previous collections. As always, all pieces are hand painted.

The following collections caught my eyes:

The updated Paris collection “Paris Mon Amour”: Spring and Romance is in the air! Lovers in Paris, passionately hugging on blue, faceted glass. Earrings depicting a little Eiffel tower and a lady on a bike dangling off delicate red hearts. The statement Paris necklace entails all of our Parisian landmarks:  The fashionista, the lovers, the girl on a bike, the metro pole. Fantastique!

Feminine and classicly beautiful  is the collection with the bows: Golden pearl hoops adorned with a bow, delicate bow rings and bracelets, a statement necklace with chunkier bows. One doesn’t know where to look first!

Les Néréides SS 2014 Paris Earrings It was so hard to chose a piece from the new spring summer collection as  I wanted them all! This year I have to save up for bigger things and only allowed myself one pair of earrings. I took these beaties home! A playful Paris scene, the Eiffel tower and a girl on a bike. Note the cat in the whicker basket.

Maritime Checks, Stripes and Beach Chairs

Australia/ Dresses/ Romantique/ Travel

German beach chair in Australia

When we think about countries and their beaches, we often have stereotypes in our minds:

Think about the British seaside, and pebbly beaches, grey skies and amusement arcades spring to mind. Reminisce about American coasts, and Boardwalk Empire, hot dog stands and roller skates dominate our imagination. Australian beaches are often associated with surfers, sharks and shrimps on a barbie. And German beaches? Despite bordering two seas (the North Sea and the Baltic Sea), no distinctive image seems to be connected with the Teutonian seaside.  However, if you’ve been to one of the German beaches, you will have noticed the blue striped wicker beach baskets dotted all over the coast. The “Strandkorb” (literally Beach basket) can house two people. They were invented in Rostock in 1882  to protect against the wind, sand and sun. It features trays and expandable leg rests to make the beach day a comfortably engineered experience.

You can imagine how surprised I was to spot the familiar looking, blue striped beach chair in Australia, 20,000 miles from home! They fitted elegantly into the stunning setting of the Dune Restaurant and kiosk at Sydney’s Palm Beach.  Perhaps the owner of the restaurant was inspired during a vacation at a German or Danish seaside to import a beach chair to the Australian shores?!

See the drawer on the left hand side? It hides a foot rest to stretch your legs! The expandable roof protects against the sun and wind.

There are two varieties of beach chairs: The North Sea beach chair is more angular, featuring straight edges to reflect the stormy North Sea. The softer and rounder Baltic Sea chair is seen here in Sydney at Dunes.

Stella’s (McCartney) colorful Trainers

Rebel/ Shoes

Pink-Trainers-Street-Style

Your closet is a room full of surprises and you should have a closer look what treasures it can hide!  I bought my pink adidas trainers by Stella Mc Cartney around 2005 or 2006. In the past 8 years, the trainers were in the box because I had no desire to wear these colorful trainers. In all those years I’d be able to sell or give away the shoes but my instinct told me keep them, their time will come. Now, in these days where fashion is so colorful, bright and flashy Stella’s trainers fit perfectly on the streets.

What to wear with knobbly or saggy Knees?

Rebel/ Wardrobe

Foulard-scarf-print-blouses

Since I’m 40 I want to tighten up my knees because I just don’t like how they look: unattractive! I’m a knee-hater and specifically gripe about the skin, the bumps and the lines that loose skin can make. I think permanently people’s eyes go to my knees all the time. That’s why I wear skirts or dresses very rare in Winter saison and never in Summer.

saggyknee1

I and many women are concerned about excess fatty tissue in their knees. Other want to rid themselves of sagging skin around knees and thighs. Causes are multifactorial – Genetics, diet and lifestyle certainly play a role. So, what to wear with knobbly or saggy knees? Only longer skirts or black matt tights with shorter skirts can camouflage these seemingly imperfections.

Cardigan-Winter-Street-Style-2014

In conclusion: our knees, in particular, allow us to run, jump, climb, squat and move throughout our days. Without them, we would be in serious trouble. So, before condemning your knees for the way they look, send them some gratitude. Some good loving.

The French Way of Live – The Greatest Deception of All?

Current Affairs/ Love & Relationship/ Movie & Books/ Romantique

Marion Cotillard for Dior

In the past two years, I’ve lapped up information on Parisians and their way of life – from fashion style to love lessons:

–  Ines de la Fresange’s French chic – My Style Bible
–  Why French children don’t throw food – How not to raise neurotic and spoilt Anglophone kids
–  What French women know about love and sex – My trusted guide on how to hold your own in a  relationship

Additionally, I interviewed two of my French friends to let our readers in on the “je ne sais quoi” of French women.

The authors of the above books such as Pam Druckerman and Mireille Guiliano (her new book, “Why French women don’t have plastic surgery”, has just been released) have been riding the “French women know it all” wave successfully and even created a new genre of book, the French way of life.

This week, Australian magazine “Women’s weekly” raised the righteous question: “Are French women and culture really that superior in all they do?” After all, obesity rates in France have doubled in the last 15 years. Leading French ladies like Catherine Deneuve have succumbed to the plastic surgeon knife just like their American counterparts. The author who initiated the craze, Mireille Guiliano, admitted herself her books only contain “commonsense” advice (eat small portions and fresh produce only, wash your face before going to bed, take the stairs instead of the lift, etc). Generally accepted knowledge the French haven’t innovated. So is all the Hype around French women a well-marketed scam invented by smart Americans cashing in on the myth?

I say no, naturally.  It is true that France hasn’t entirely resisted the wave of junk food chains that swept the world. However, France as a whole is still the slimmest nation in Europe. The streets of Paris are still dominated by family butchers, bakers and restaurants rather than American food chains. Take Starbucks, for example. While the American coffee chain has most of Europe tightly in its grip, it struggles to make money in the mother country of coffee culture. The French like to “sip and sit”, not carrying paper cups. French bakery chains like Paul’s and Le Pain Quotidien are hugely successful in London, but looked down on as “chains” in their home country.

French actresses are not unreceptive to surgery. However, plastic surgery is nowhere near as widespread in France as it is in the US and the extent of the surgery is more natural.

Where do you stand? Have you read any of the French way of life books or do you refuse to believe that the French are God’s gift to the rest of the world? Let us know your thoughts and let’s discuss!

Return to the Boat House at Palm Beach

Australia/ Decor/ Romantique/ Travel

Boat House Sydney

A year on from my last trip to the lovely restaurant Boat House at Sydney’s Palm Beach, I revisited my favourite must-see destination. The boat house is a  beautifully decorated, relaxing restaurant built on a wooden pier, looking like out of an interior design coffee table book for “Romantic, rustic sea-side Chic”. Palm Beach, situated at Sydney’s north shore, is home to one of Sydney’s most expensive properties. It’s easy to see why: A beautiful drive through thick Sydney rainforest bushland  leads to the most unspoilt sandy beaches typical of Sydney’s North.

A lunch at the boat house is always a special, inspiring treat. Sit back, relax and enjoy the photos of my slice of heaven.

Rebel’s Opulent Statement Earrings

Accessoires/ Rebel

opulent-satement-earrings

It’s been 4 weeks since I cut my hair: A lot has changed for me in terms of fashion. For example, I was never a fan of jewelry but now with my shorter hair I got the taste of opulent statement earrings. Fortunately, major Statement Earrings can easily translate from Golden Globe and Oscar red carpet fashion to the real world. I like it to break these babies with a simple sweater and big sunglasses during the day.
